The Storm

I hate thunderstorms! Whenever I see or hear a distant thunderstorm, I get scared. When there’s one right over us, I climb under the table for protection. Tom doesn’t seem to care so much. He likes to watch the lightning. But, the other night, we had a storm that even scared him!

We were already asleep when the lightning started and woke us both up. Tom checked his phone and looked concerned. “There’s a severe storm coming our way”, he said. “There could be some really bad hail.” I don’t know what hail is, but if Tom doesn’t like it I don’t like it either. That’s when I got really scared. I was trembling all over and couldn’t even move!

Tom decided to go to the office to sit the storm out. He put my harness on and we drove over there. There were still a couple people working, but they were getting ready to close in a while. The storm hadn’t reached us yet, so Tom asked if there was another place we could go. The security guard gave Tom a couple ideas, so off we went.

The first place we tried was the bathhouse across the street from our den-on-wheels. Tom didn’t like that much. We got back in the truck and drove into the parking garage. “At least the truck won’t get hailed on here,” he said.

We sat there for a long time while the storm passed over us. The lightning and thunder just kept  going and going! It hardly ever stopped! I laid in the truck and curled up into a little ball. Tom went out a few times to take some pictures. The security guard stopped by to talk every once in a while.

Finally, the storm started going away. We got back to bed early in the morning and slept late. In the end, I guess, the hail never reached us. Tom would have been pretty upset if it had. But now, I have another thing to be scared of. I heard Tom and the security guard talking about something called a “tornado”. I hope I never find out what that is.
